ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Shaw University women's tennis opened Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action with three wins after defeating Bowie State, Elizabeth City State and Virginia Union at the CIAA Round-Up hosted by ECSU Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Bears defeated the Bulldogs, 8-1 after sweeping doubles by the scores of 6-0. In singles, senior Teodora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) fell 8-5 at the No. 1 singles but the Lady Bears would claim singles No. 2-6 by the scores of 8-0 for the win.
Against the Lady Vikings, Shaw swept the Lady Vikings thanks to a 3-0 start in doubles capped off by three singles victories from freshman Kundai Manyonga (Harare, Zimbabwe), junior Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) and freshman Eva Ostermeier (Munich, Germany) by the scores of 8-0 for the 7-0 team win.
Shaw closed out the round-up with a sweep of the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union also by the score of 7-0 to stand 3-0 in league action and improve to 5-3 overall. The Lady Bears combined for 17 wins in singles and nine doubles victories for the weekend.
The Lady Bears will be back in action on Mar. 12 at Livingstone for its division opener. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
