RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University men's and women's tennis will begin its 2019 campaign with a road contest at N.C. Wesleyan today at 2 p.m.in Rocky Mount, N.C. at the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Center.
The Lady Bears return four players from last year's team that claimed its second consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) title. Shaw finished the 2018 season, 21-3 overall and 12-0 in CIAA action.
Notable returners include senior Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain) and junior Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) who were both named to the CIAA All-Conference Teams. Mantecon went 15-2 overall in singles while posting a doubles record of 18-1. As for Fekete, she went 13-2 overall at the sixth singles position and garnered 13-2 mark in doubles.
N.C. Wesleyan, a DIII member of USA South Conference is coming off a 13-4 season in 2018.
On the men's side, Shaw will look to get things going and back on track for 2019 as the Bears finished 3-10 overall. Shaw has four returners from last year's squad and welcomes three newcomers. Notable returners is senior Daniel Ac (Kikinda, Serbia) and Ngonidzashe Makambwa (Mabelreign Harare, Zimbabwe). Makambwa went 7-3 at the No. 2 singles and finished with 8-4 at the No. 1 doubles.
Both the men's and women's tennis programs are currently ranked in the Atlantic Region at No. 8. The Bears and Lady Bears are led by Sunday Enitan in his 22nd season.
