LADY BEARS CRUISE INTO SEMIFINALS WITH 5-0 WIN OVER BOWIE STATE

BOWIE, Md. With little trouble, the No. 1 seeded and No. 7 ranked Shaw University women's tennis team advanced to the semifinal round of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championships with a convincing 5-0 win over No. 8 seed Bowie State on Thursday afternoon on the campus of Bowie State University.

 

The win sets up a match with either No. 4 seed Winston-Salem State and No. 5 Virginia Union on Friday at 12 noon.

 

With the win Shaw improves to 19-2 overall on the season. The Lady Bears wasted no time with a 3-0 lead after doubles competition, earning wins all by the scores of 8-0. Shaw pushed forward, sealing the victory with wins at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, giving Shaw the 5-0 victory.

 

Sophomore Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain) was a 6-0, 6-0 victor at No. 2 singles while sophomore Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) also gathered a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6.
