SALISBURY, N.C. – The Shaw University women's tennis team (17-2) fell on Thursday afternoon at Catawba College(6-12), 7-2, its first loss since its first match of the 2018 season on Feb. 11. The Lady Bears got one doubles win from Andrijana Martic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain) and one singles victory from Daniela Vanko (Quebec, Montreal) at No. 1 but it was not enough to take the host Lady Indians.
Catawba won the first and third doubles matches to take a 2-1 advantage. In singles action, Marilyne Kamegne (Yaoundé, Cameroon) was defeated in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 5-7 while Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) put up a good fight at No. 5 but fell in three-sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-10 but the Lady Bears suffered losses at No. 3, 4, and 6, respectively.
Unfortunately, the victory at the No. 1 singles would be all the Lady Bears could muster on Thursday.
Shaw will look to close out the regular season with two home matches against Charleston (WV) on Apr. 14 and Elizabeth City State on Apr. 16. Both matches will be played at Worthdale Park and will begin at 1 p.m.
