RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University women's tennis defeated Winston-Salem State University, 9-0 for their fifth-straight conference victory on Sunday, Mar. 18. The win improved the Lady Bears overall record to 8-1 while the Rams dip to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in the CIAA.
Senior Daniela Vanko (Quebec, Montreal), senior Marilyne Kamegne (Yaoundé, Cameroon), freshman Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain), junior Andrijana Martic (Belgrade, Serbia), senior Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) and sophomore Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) were all double winners for the Lady Bears as well as taking their singles matches and doubles competitions.
Vanko won the opening set of the singles match 6-2, 6-0 while Kamgene was a 6-2, 6-1 victor. They both teamed up take the first doubles set win 8-3.
Martic teamed up with Mantecon during the second doubles for an 8-2 match win. Mantecon earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 3 while Martic secured a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 4 singles. Meanwhile, Aleem and Fekete topped their opponents 8-0 in doubles prior to singles where Aleem won her singles match 6-2, 6-0 and Fekete clinched a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 6 position for the 9-0 sweep.
The Lady Bears return to action on Tuesday with a home match against Fayetteville State at 1 p.m.
