RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's tennis team picked up their third 9-0 win of the season on Saturday, topping Pfeiffer University by that score at Worthdale Park. The win improves the Lady Bears to 6-1 overall and 4-0 at home while the Lady Falcons fall to 2-6 on the season.
The Lady Bears jumped out to a 3-point lead after doubles play with senior Daniela Vanko (Quebec, Montreal) and senior Marilyne Kamegne (Yaoundé, Cameroon) earning an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles while senior Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) and sophomore Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) rolled to an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles.
The Lady Bears had three players garner 6-0, 6-0 wins, including Kamegne, Aleem and Fekete at the No. 3, 5, and 6 singles, respectively. Both Vanko and Mantecon defeated their opponents 6-2, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 and 2 singles while Martic was good for a 6-4 and 6-1 win at the No. 4 position.
Shaw will return to action on Sunday, Mar. 18 with another home match. The Lady Bears will play host to Winston-Salem State at 2 p.m. at Worthdale Park.
