RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's soccer team didn't have to travel far for its first win of the 2019 season. The Lady Bears scored late in the second half and held off a late flurry as they slipped past host Meredith for the 2-1 victory.
Shaw improves to 2-1 on the season while Meredith falls to 1-5 dropping their fifth straight match.
Freshman Fenja Soeth (Bokel, Germany) would get the Lady Bears on the board first scoring in the 33rd minute from a pass from fellow freshman Azul Mardueno (Guadalajara, Mexico) but MC's Morgan Thomas posted the equalizer for the Avenging Angels at the 65th minute.
It would take less than 10 minutes for Soeth to score the game winner scoring on an unassisted breakaway at the 73 minute mark. Meredith had multiple chances to send the match to OT but Shaw would prevail with a valiant defensive effort.
Shaw will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 18 as they host Mouth Olive at the MAC. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
