RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's soccer team will travel to Murfreesboro, NC to face the Hawks of Chowan University for its 2019 season opener Monday (Sept. 9) afternoon after the Lady Bears original season opener was postponed last week due to Hurricane Dorian.
The Lady Bears are coming off a historic run in 2018 that featured Shaw women's squad start the season on a six-game win-streak, ultimately winning 12 matches with a 12-4 overall record – a program-best in its second year as an NCAA DII independent member.
Sophomore Jasa Curry (Ellicott City, MD) had a tremendous showing last season, ranking second in DII for goals per game (1.44), setting program records in single-season goals (23) – sixth in DII, five game winners while tallying 51 total points in her first season.
The Lady Bears have a 14 returning from last year's squad and welcome seven newcomers. Randy McClure leads Shaw women's soccer in his first season.
As for the Hawks of CU, Chowan is coming off a loss to No. 19 Lincoln Memorial in its last outing. The Hawks were 9-7-1 during its 2018 campaign.
Monday's contest will mark the just the second meeting between the two programs. The first meeting occurred during the 2017 season where the Lady Bears suffered a 3-0 defeat to CU on Oct. 18. The Hawks hold the all-time series record at 1-0-0.
