FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Shaw women's soccer team picked up its second-consecutive win of the year by defeating Methodist, 3-2 in a double-overtime thriller Thursday evening. Sophomore Leslie Mendoza (Miami Beach, FL) scored the game winning goal in the 105th minute to push the Lady Bears (2-0-0) past the Monarchs (2-2-0).
Methodist scored first at the 19th minute mark but Shaw created its first opportunity to match when sophomore Laura Regidor (Zamora, Spain) found freshman Jasa Curry (Ellicott, City, MD) for her first goal of the year and the Lady Bears first goal of the game. The scored would be tied at 1-1 heading into intermission.
In the second half, freshman Samantha Stiglmair (Karlshuld, Germany) scored her third goal of the season off a corner kick to put Shaw ahead 2-1 but down the stretch, the Monarchs Sierra Swasey buried a penalty kick from the left side to send the game into overtime.
After the first extra-period ended with no goals, the two team were determined to avoid a draw. In under six minutes, () a tap in goal from the left side from Mendoza gave the Lady Bears the crucial victory.
Shaw outshot the Monarchs 16-12 in the Thursday night battle and the Lady Bears delivered an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Caylie Hartman (Commerce City, CO) picked up her first win of the season in 105:36 minutes and made three saves.
Shaw will return to action Saturday, Sept. 8 at Christendom. Kickoff is slated for 12 noon.
