SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Shaw University women's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2018 season when the Lady Bears earned a 3-1 victory on the road at Converse College Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, Shaw improves to 1-0 on the season, while the Valkyries fall to 0-2.
Freshman Samantha Stiglmair (Karlshuld, Germany) led the way with two goals on three shots while sophomore Leslie Mendoza (Miami Beach, FL) recorded one shot and one goal. Sophomore Shianne Duplantis (West Palm Beach, FL) played all 90:00 with four saves and her first win at the goalkeeper position.
The Lady Bears wasted no time as they jumped out to a 2-0 in the first eight minutes of action from Stiglmar. The first score featured a header, followed by a turnover in the box by Converse.
The Valkyries would get on the scoreboard at the 20:14 mark when Cassidy Marshall drilled one in to cut the Lady Bears lead 2-1 heading into halftime.
Converse had opportunities to close the gap but a late goal by Mendoza derailed the chances of Valkyries comeback down the stretch as the Lady Bears defense was able to control the pace for the remainder of the contest for the 3-1 win.
Shaw registered 18 shots, 10 on goal and two assists. Meanwhile, the Valkyries finished with 10 shots and five on goal.
The Lady Bears will return to action Thursday, Sept. 6 at Methodist. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
