PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Lady Bears soccer team registered several scoring opportunities, but were unable to find nylon as the Shaw University women's soccer team fell to Carlow University, 2-0 Thursday afternoon.
With the loss, Shaw falls to 2-5 overall on the season, while the Celtics improve to 5-1 on the year. The Lady Bears return to action Friday, Sept. 22 at UC Clermont College in a non-conference battle beginning at 1 p.m.
Neither teams scored in the first half but in the second, the Celtics found the net thanks to Alexa Mermigas' 18-yard goal off the far post for a 1-0 lead. At the 83rd minute, Carlow's Kristina Wallace scored a one-on-one goal to give the Celtics a two-point cushion that they would not relinquish.
Freshman Laura Regidor (Zamora, Spain) tallied nine saves for the contest, while freshman duos Alana Navarrette (Sun City, CA) and Melina Burnside (Colorado Springs, CO) led the offensive attack for Shaw with two shot on goals each. As a unit, Shaw recorded 8 total shots compared to Carlow's 20.
