CHARLOTTE, N.C. Senior guard Dejoria "DJ" Howard (Orangeburg, SC) scored a game-high 22 points but it would not be enough for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Basketball Tournament run as the Shaw University women's basketball team fell 73-47 to Bowie State University in the opening round at the Bojangles Coliseum on Tuesday afternoon.

Howard was 8-for-18 from the field and 4-of-9 from the 3-point line while grabbing five rebounds. Junior guard Ariana Fleming (Newark, DE) finished with 11 points, six steals and two rebounds to wrap up the double figure scoring for Shaw.

The Lady Bears got off to a great start in the opening quarter, scoring nine straight in the first two minutes of play. Despite a run from Bowie State, including cutting Shaw's lead to two points on a free throw shot, Fleming scored back-to-back buckets to give Shaw a 15-11 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter featured three lead changes and two ties as the Bulldogs went up five points capped off by two free throws from Seanice Lyons with 1:06 left. Shaw scored four-straight points, but the Lady Bears trailed Bowie State at halftime, 27-26.

The Bulldogs used a 6-0 run to start the third stanza, the Lady Bears finally snapped its scoring drought with a 3-pointer from Howard to close the gap but a layup from Kyaja Williams created a four-point difference with 6:28 left. Over a span of two minutes, BSU grew a double-digit lead before Shaw cut the deficit to seven on a free throw from junior guard Tyra Sinclair (Laurel, MD) but the Bulldogs owned a 48-36 frame at the end of the third period.

Poor shooting in the fourth quarter continued to plague Shaw, the Lady Bears hit just 20-percent from the free throw line down the stretch as Bowie State punched in a 25-9 scoring run to run away with the win.

Williams led Bowie State in scoring with 22 points, 13 rebounds and six steals while Shawnkia McCallum added 16 points and Drew Calhoun turned in 13 points and five assists.

The loss ends the Lady Bears 2019-20 run at 6-21 overall. Bowie State improves to 23-4 on the year and will move on to the quarterfinal round to face Johnson C. Smith on Thursday, Feb. 27.
