RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University women's basketball will close out the regular season this weekend when the Lady Bears travel to Charlotte, N.C. to face the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division matchup on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. from BrayBoy Gymnasium.
The Lady Bears (6-19, 2-14 CIAA) have lost its last 11 games, coming off a disappointing 86-41 setback to Fayetteville State University on Senior Day (Feb. 19) in Spaulding. Sophomore center Amani Moxley (Moreno Valley, CA) led the way with her first career double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds in the falling effort for Shaw.
For the season, Shaw's offense and defense has been led by senior guard Dejoria "DJ" Howard (Orangeburg, SC) at 13.1 points and 6.0 rebounds per outing. The Lady Bears average 55 points per game, shooting under 40-percent from the field, 30-percent from the 3-point line, 71-percent from the charity stripe while grabbing 33 rebounds a night through 25 games this season.
The Golden Bulls saw their seven game win streak come to an end on Wednesday as JCSU suffered a 63-61 edge by Winston-Salem State. The loss had dropped JCSU to 16-10 overall, 11-4 in the CIAA and 8-3 in the South. Le'Zarea Bowens is the team's leading scorer, charting 12.5 points per game while Aubriana Bonner has a team-best 8.2 rebounds per outing.
The matchup between Shaw and Johnson C. Smith will be the second this season. JCSU took home a 69-60 win over the Lady Bears back on Feb. 5 in Raleigh. Since 2007, the series between Shaw and Johnson C. Smith is tied at 16-16 as the Golden Bulls have won the last five meeting against the Lady Bears.
