RALEIGH, N.C. – Riding a two-game win-streak for the second time this season, the Shaw University women's basketball team will look to carry its winning momentum in to Saturday's contest when the Lady Bears travel to Fayetteville State University for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contest.
Shaw is 6-8 overall and 2-4 in the CIAA while Fayetteville State stands 7-7 overall and 5-2 in league play. Within the Southern Division, Shaw is 2-1 for fourth place while FSU is 3-0 in first place.
The Lady Bears are coming off a 61-53 win over Lincoln (PA) University Thursday in a non-conference contest, led by a strong fourth quarter and a game-high of 23 points and eight rebounds from junior forward Diamonique Kennedy (Beggs, OK). As for the Lady Broncos, FSU has also won their last two games, including a 68-38 victory over Johnson C. Smith on Jan. 6. Three players scored in double figures led by London Thompson with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Within the CIAA, FSU ranks fourth in the league in offense (66.0) while Shaw is 11th (56.1). The Lady Broncos have the second-best shooting percentage at 42-percent while leading the league in 3-point field goals (40-percent) and blocked shots (3.36). Meanwhile, Shaw ranks second in free throws (70-percent) and third in defensive rebounds (34.3).
The games top scorers for both teams features Fayetteville State's Katisha Hyman at 18.4 points per game (4th in CIAA) while senior guard Dejoria "DJ" Howard (Orangeburg, SC) paces Shaw at 12.6 points per outing.
Saturday's contest will mark the first meeting between the two teams this season. Since the 2006-2007 season, Fayetteville State has won 15 of the last 29 games highlighted by a five-game win-streak over the Lady Bears dating back to 2016-17.
