RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's basketball team claimed its first win of the New Year with a 69-48 over Claflin University Monday night inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. The Lady Bears had three players finish in double figure scoring led by junior guard Ariana Fleming (Newark, DE) with 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field and five rebounds.

Senior guard Victoria Swanson (Monmouth, OR) recorded a season-high 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the 3-point line and four rebounds while junior guard Rachelle White (Euclid, OH) chipped in 13 points, eight rebounds and five steals to help the Lady Bears improve to a 5-8 overall record, 2-4 mark in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and 2-1 in the Southern Division.

Both teams traded baskets through most of the opening quarter. Claflin took its biggest lead of the quarter at four points on a layup from Tatyanna Hollins with 1:57 left but a 3-pointer from Swanson clipped the Lady Panthers lead 12-11 at the end of the period.

The second quarter was much like the first but at the 8:54 mark, Claflin scored 10 unanswered points to take a seven-point lead (24-17) over Shaw with 3:35 left in the first half. Two free throws from Swanson then led to a 9-0 run for Shaw and a 27-24 lead at intermission.

The Lady Bears used a 13-4 spread to take double digit lead to begin the third quarter. The Lady Panthers managed to cut the deficit to single digits on two free throws but Shaw never flinched, mustering a 9-1 scoring frame in the last 2:18 for a 51-35 lead at the end of the stanza.

In the fourth quarter, Shaw would see its largest lead of the game at 24-points, capped off by an easy two from Fleming. The Lady Bears would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the night.

Claflin remains winless on the season at 0-12 overall, 0-6 in the CIAA and 0-3 in the South. Breanna Price led the way for the Lady Panthers offensively with 12 points and seven rebounds while Dionna Long contributed 11 points, eight rebounds and seven steals.

Shaw will look to carry tonight's winning momentum on Thursday's against a hot Lincoln (Pa.) University team for a cross division contest. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. inside Spaulding.
