RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University women's basketball will look for its first win of the New Year as the Lady Bears host Claflin University Monday, Jan. 6 inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m., with live coverage provided by the Shaw Bears Sports Network.
Monday's contest is one of two games that will be played as the men's game will start approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the women's tilt.
Claflin has not won a game this season with a 0-11 overall record and 0-5 mark in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). Dionna Long is the team's leading scorer, averaging 13.4 points per game while Dashia Jackson adds 10.1 points. Both players post 5.3 rebounds, respectively.
Meanwhile, Shaw stands 4-8 overall and 1-4 in the CIAA after falling in an early hole against No. 7, Virginia Union Lady Panthers, 88-49 on Saturday (Jan. 4) in Richmond, Va. Senior guard Dejoria "DJ" Howard (Orangeburg, SC) struggled last game with just six points but she is the Lady Bears best player, averaging 13.1 points per game and a team-high 7.2 rebounds, while junior guard Ariana Fleming (Newark, DE) contributes 10. 7 points per outing.
The Lady Bears will have somewhat of an advantage against the Lady Panthers since Claflin has not played since Dec. 21. This will be the second meeting between Shaw and Claflin this season. The Lady Bears snapped a five-game losing skid with a 58-53 win on Dec. 21 to close out the 2019 portion of the schedule.
General admission is $15, non-Shaw students with a valid school ID is $10, senior citizen (65 and up) and military personnel is also $10 with a valid ID, all Shaw students with a proper ID is FREE.
