SALISBURY, N.C.  The Shaw University women's basketball team jumped out to a 17-11 lead in the opening quarter but was unable to come away with the win on the road as the Lady Bears suffered a 64-49 decision to Livingstone College in its Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division opener.

The loss dips the Lady Bears to 3-7 overall, 0-3 in the CIAA and 0-1 in the South while Livingstone improves to 4-6 on the year, 2-3 in the league and 1-1 in division.

Junior guard Ariana Fleming (Newark, DE) paced Shaw with 15 points and six rebounds, she was 7-of-9 from the free throw line while redshirt freshman Sydni Callis (Maricopa, AZ) added eight points, one steal and an assist.

For the contest, Shaw shot just 30-percent from the floor (16-52) and 13-percent (2-15) from the 3-point line but the Lady Bears did connect 15-of-19 from the charity stripe for 79-percent.

The Lady Bears opened the first quarter with 11-2 run capped off by a 3-pointer from Howard, her fifth point in the run. Livingstone came within six points twice, scoring the quarters final four points as Shaw owned a 17-11 lead after one quarter of action.

LC scored 11-straight to start the second stanza, the Lady Bears did not score its first basket of the quarter until sophomore center Amani Moxley (Moreno Valley, CA) scored a layup off a pass from Callis which snapped a scoring drought for Shaw as 4:24 showed on the clock. Unfortunately for the Lady Bears, Shaw had eight turnovers in the quarter that led to 15 points for LC and a 35-21 lead at intermission.

The Lady Bears made the third quarter interesting, reeling off a 10-6 scoring margin with 4:06 remaining but Livingstone maneuvered an 8-2 run to take a comfortable 16-point lead as the Lady Blue Bears stood 49-33 over Shaw at the end of the third stanza.

Although Shaw was neck-and-neck with the LC as far as points midway through the fourth quarter with seven points apiece, the Lady Bears still trailed by double digits. Shaw had trimmed at the Livingstone's lead with a pair of free throws, but the Lady Blue Bears quickly responded with an easy two in the paint. Ultimately, Shaw would not get any closer than 13 points for the remainder of the contest.

LC held a 44-16 ration in points in the paint, 23-10 in points off turnovers and 20-2 in fast break points over Shaw. For the game, the Lady Blue Bears shot 50-percent from the field (27-54) and was 7-for-7 from the free throw line.

Offensively, Livingstone was led by Georgia Campbell with 18 points while Dasia Harris chipped in 16 points and nine rebounds. Daijah Turner would round out the double figure for the Lady Blue Bears with a double-double, 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Next up, Shaw will look to regroup quickly as the Lady Bears continue its road skid a division play at Claflin University on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m.
