WOMEN’S HOOPS TRAVELS TO VIRGINIA STATE FOR NON-CONFERENCE TILT

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's basketball team will head to Ettrick, Va. to take on the Trojans of Virginia State University on Saturday, Dec. 14 for a non-conference game at the VSU Multipurpose Center.

Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. with live coverage available on www.shawbears.com or www.govsutrojans.com.

This will be the second meeting between the two teams as Virginia State defeated Shaw, 62-47 on Dec. 2 as a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) contest. During that contest, senior guard Dejoria "DJ" Howard (Orangeburg, SC) led all scorers with 16 points and 10 rebounds while the Trojans' Yazmen Hannah finished with 14 points.

Since that setback, Shaw has suffered three-straight losses including its most recent decision, 58-36 by the hands of Elizabeth City State Thursday (Dec. 12).

The Lady Bears enter the weekend 3-4 overall while VSU stands 5-5 on the season. The Trojans extended its win-streak at home to five games after a 54-46 win against Winston-Salem State (Dec. 12).

Senior guard Dejoria "DJ" Howard (Orangeburg, SC) is the Lady Bear's leading scorer and rebounder with 15.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game while VSU is led by Natalia Leaks with 12.0 ppg and a team-high 6.6 rebounds, respectively.

Since 2009, Shaw has defeated Virginia State 10 of the last 17 meetings highlighted by a four-game win-streak during the 2011-2014 span but the last 10 outings between the two have been split at 5-5.

Following Saturday's game, the Lady Bears will continue its road skid with a trip to Salisbury, N.C. for a division opener with Livingstone College on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 5:30 p.m.
