RALEIGH, N.C.  After returning to the win column last weekend at the VSU Thanksgiving Tournament, the Shaw University women's basketball team saw its two game win-streak end as the Lady Bears fell 62-47 to the visiting Trojans of Virginia State University Monday in its Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) opener.

The loss dips the Lady Bears to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in league action while the Trojans improve to 5-3 on the year and 1-1 in the CIAA.

Shaw opened up the contest with an 11-2 run in the first seven minutes of play. VSU then cut the deficit in half at the end of the first quarter with the score in favor of the Lady Bears 14-7.

The second stanza would prove to be tightly contested, as there were two ties before a 3-pointer from the Trojans gave VSU a 23-22 edge with 2:53 left. Both teams traded baskets including a layup from junior guard Rachelle White (Euclid, OH) at the buzzer but Shaw trailed 25-24 to Virginia State at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Bears were outscored in both the third and fourth quarter. Shaw tied the game at 32-all with 5:02 left in the third frame but VSU used a 10-2 run to take a 42-34 lead heading into the final stanza. During the fourth stanza, the Lady Bears trailed the entire frame and although Shaw cut, the Trojans lead to single digits (55-46), another 3-pointer from Autumn Thompson put the damper on any chance of a Lady Bears comeback.

Shaw was led by senior guard Dejoria "DJ" Howard (Orangeburg, SC) with her first double-double of the season, 16 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three steals and two assists while both junior guard Tyra Sinclair (Laurel, MD) and junior guard Ariana Fleming (Newark, DE) added eight points apiece.

The Lady Bears were responsible for 32.7-percent from the field, connecting 5-of-19 from the 3-point line as the Trojans outscored SU 24-16 in the paint, 36-10 from their bench and 28-10 in points off turnovers.

VSU's top scorer was Yazmen Hannah with 14 points while Hopson added 12 points and Jalynn Spaulding finished with 10 points, rounding out the double figure scoring for the Trojans who posted 42.6-percent shooting from the floor and 47.6-percent from the 3-point line.

The Lady Bears will return to action in Spaulding on Dec. 7 versus Bowie State University for another CIAA cross division contest slated for 2 p.m.
