ETTRICK, Va. – Senior guard Dejoria Howard (Orangeburg, SC) scored 22 points to lead the Shaw University women's basketball to a 64-40 victory over Virginia University of Lynchburg on the final day of the VSU Thanksgiving Classic held at the VSU Multipurpose Center Saturday afternoon.


For the contest, Shaw outscored the Dragons in all four quarters led by a shooting percentage of 46-percent, including 7-of-15 from the 3-point line while holding a 37-27 on the glass defensively over VUL. The Lady Bears now improve to 3-2 on the year with today's victory.


Howard turned in a 22-point performance on 9-of-13 shooting and 4-of-7 from the 3-point line to go along with four rebounds while junior guard Tyra Sinclair (Laurel, MD) chipped in 15 points, eight assists and seven rebounds as junior forward Diamononique Kennedy (Beggs, OK) recorded a team-high 13 rebounds and seven points.


The Lady Bears wasted no time, owning a 9-0 lead in the first six minutes of the contest before taking a 17-10 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter. Shaw groomed a double-digit lead in the second stanza, outscoring VUL 17-14 for a 34-24 stand at halftime.


In the second half, the Dragons cut the Lady Bears lead to five points at the 5:41 mark of the third quarter but Shaw used a 13-3 run to stretch its lead 49-34 to end the third frame.


In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears outscored VUL 15-6 that led to a 24-point lead in the final 10 seconds of the game as Shaw cruised to second-straight victory.


The Lady Bears will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 2 with a home contest against Virginia State University for its conference opener. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. in Spaulding Gymnasium.
