ETTRICK, Va. – The Shaw University women's basketball team was able to hold off a 46-36 scoring frame in the second half from the Augusta University Jaguars to come away with the 60-56 win day one of the VSU Thanksgiving Tournament Friday afternoon at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
Shaw improves to 2-2 on the year while Augusta drops to 2-4 overall.
The Lady Bears had three players finish in double figure scoring led by senior guard Dejoria "DJ" Howard (Orangeburg, SC) with 14 points and nine rebounds while junior guard Ariana Fleming (Newark, DE) added 12 points and junior forward Diamononique Kennedy (Beggs, OK) recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Shaw had a great first half highlighted by the Lady Bears defense that held the Jags to just 10 points after two quarters before going into the locker room with a 24-10 lead at the break.
Although Augusta made a run, the Lady Bears maintained a lead throughout the third quarter (40-26) but the in the fourth stanza with a little over three minutes remaining, the Jags had erased a 14-point deficit capped off by two free throws as the score showed 51-50 in favor of Shaw.
The Lady Bears remained poised down the stretch, picking up a pair of free throws in the final two minutes of regulation. Shaw then connected on four of its final six free throws to derail any chance of Augusta coming back before ultimately closing out the contest with the win.
Shaw will return to action Saturday (Nov. 30) against Virginia-Lynchburg at 1 p.m. at the VSU Multipurpose Center to conclude the final day of the VSU Thanksgiving Tournament.
