RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's basketball earned a 64-55 victory against Carver Bible College on Monday night inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. The Lady Bears held off a Lady Cougars team in the last three minutes of the game to secure the win, capped off by a 9-0 run.

The win provides Shaw with its first win of the 2019-20 season at 1-1 overall while Carver Bible falls to 0-2 on the year.

Shaw was led by junior forward Diamononique Kennedy (Beggs, OK) with 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting while sophomore center Amani Moxley (Moreno Valley, CA) chipped in 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting and nine rebounds. Junior guard Ariana Fleming (Newark, DE) added 11 points and seven rebounds to round out the double figure scoring while defensively, junior guard Rachelle White (Euclid, OH) recorded a game-high six steals and six points for Shaw in the winning effort.

The Lady Bears wasted no time jumping out to a double digit lead, posting a 17-3 lead in the first seven minutes of play. Back-to-back baskets from Moxley gave Shaw a 23-11 lead heading into the second quarter.

Carver Bible cut the Lady Bears lead to single digits in the second stanza. The Lady Cougars outscored Shaw 18-14 but the Lady Bears connected 6-of-12 for 50-percent from the field to take a 37-29 lead at halftime.

Both teams were pretty even in the third quarter as the lead changed twice before a jumper from junior guard Keyonte Cherry (Rocky Mount, NC) led to Shaw scoring nine unanswered points and a 50-42 lead at the end of the quarter.

Things became interesting in the fourth frame as Carver Bible stole the lead on an 11-2 run with 4:40 left in regulation. A free-throw from Fleming steered into 3-0 spurt in favor of the Lady Bears as a critical tip-in from Moxley induced a seven-straight points for Shaw for the win.

Carver Bible had four players finish in double figure scoring led by Imari Hightower with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals while Kwyneshia Spense chipped in 14 points, six rebounds and three assists. Jaleesa Dillard recorded a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds while Alaysia Fowlkes added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Shaw will return to action Saturday, Nov. 23 at Elizabeth City State University for its Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) opener. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
