CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Shaw University women's basketball saw its season come to an end as the Lady Bears fell to Elizabeth City State University, 77-55 during the opening round of the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Basketball Tournament at the Bojangles Coliseum Monday night.
The Lady Bears conclude its season 7-22 overall while ECSU (14-15 overall) advances to the next round to face the No. 3 South seed Winston-Salem State on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 4:30 p.m.
Shaw was paced by junior Macy Keen (Fort Lauderdale, FL) with 16 points and 12 rebounds – her 13th double double of the season while senior Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) added 14 points and freshman Amani Moxley (Moreno Valley, CA) chipped in 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.
The Lady Bears made 33.3-percent of its shots in the fourth quarter. For the contest, they made 37.7-percent of its shots including 33.3-percent of their 3-point attempts (4 of 12). Shaw only got to the free throw line eight times, making five for 62.5-percent.
Shaw only trailed by nine after two quarters of action as the score reflected 40-31 at halftime. The Lady Bears pulled within one on a 3-point play from sophomore Keyonte Cherry (Rocky Mount, NC) but the Lady Vikings used a 9-2 run to close out the quarter with a 55-47 lead.
In the fourth quarter, ECSU registered a 23-8 scoring spread to pull away from Shaw and end the Lady Bears season.
Asia Deal led all scorers with 22 points and four rebounds while Nateria Luster hauled in 19 points and 12 rebounds. Jaylyn Brown tallied 14 points and six rebounds while Devona Stell finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds for ECSU.
