CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Shaw University women's basketball team will be the No. 7 seed in the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Basketball Tournament announced Saturday (Feb. 23). The 45th CIAA Women's Basketball Annual Tournament will be held Monday, Feb. 25 – Saturday, Mar. 2 at both the Bojangles Colsieum and the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C.
The Lady Bears will meet the No. 6 seed of the North, Elizabeth City State University for the opening game of the tournament on Monday, Feb. 25. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Bojangles Coliseum. The game will offer free audio on www.shawbears.com with Donal Ware and Daimeon Banks calling the live action.
With the conclusion of regular season competition, the 2019 Women's Basketball Tournament pairings and bracket have been announced by the CIAA Basketball Tournament Committee. Pairings are based on the highest divisional winning percentage. In the event of a tie, the tiebreaker rule begins with head-to-head competition results followed by head-to-head point differential. If a tie situation remains, the highest conference winning percentage will be utilized. The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds of each division receive a first round bye.
Shaw was given the No. 7 seed concluding the regular season 7-21 overall, 2-16 in the conference and 1-11 in the South.
Monday's contest will mark the second meeting between Shaw and ECSU this season. The Lady Vikings defeated the Lady Bears 86-58 back on Dec. 13, 2018. Senior KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) paced SU with 20 points while Jaylyn Brown registered a game-high 30 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the long distance to lead ECSU.
The winner between Shaw and Elizabeth City State will advance to the next round on Tuesday, Feb. 26 to face No. 3 South – Winston-Salem State at 4:30 p.m. at the Bojangles Coliseum.
