RALEIGH, N.C. – On Saturday, Feb. 2, the Shaw University men's and women's basketball teams will travel to Charlotte, N.C. to take on the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division doubleheader inside BrayBoy Gymnasium.
The women's game will start at 2 p.m., followed by the men's game approximately 20 minutes after the completion of the women's contest. Both games will offer live video and live statistics on www.shawbears.com. Fans can also follow score updates on Twitter @ShawBears.
Shaw women has lost its last four games, including an 82-44 loss to Fayetteville State Wednesday night despite a big effort from junior Macy Keen (Fort Lauderdale, FL) who notched her 10th double-double of the season with a game-high 23 points and 15 rebounds. The Lady Bears (5-16) are still in search of its first conference win of 2018-19; Shaw is seventh in the division polls with a 0-5 mark.
However, the Bears enter Saturday's game on a two-game winning streak with its most recent over Fayetteville State, 107-87 Wednesday night. Junior Amir Hinton (Philadelphia, PA) who scored a game-high 33 points and four assists led the balanced attack that also featured junior DaVaughn Kelsie's (Richmond, VA) 15 points and junior Derrick Randolph (Chicago, IL) with 13 points and seven assists. Junior Davon Dillard (Gary, IN) finished with 12 points and nine rebounds to round out the double figure scoring for Shaw. The Bears (10-10, 5-6 CIAA) are second in the division with a 4-2 mark.
As for JCSU basketball, the women is coming off a 71-68 loss to Winston-Salem State Wednesday. Blair Thomas led the Golden Bulls with 13 points while Teana Lewis contributed 10 points. JCSU (10-11, 7-4 CIAA) is third in the South with a record of 3-2.
The Golden Bulls men's basketball team is 6-12 overall and 3-8 in the league despite winning two-straight games, with its most recent against the Rams of WSSU. JCSU earned a 73-62 win over WSSU led by Cayse Minor and Roddric Ross who combined for 42 points (25 for Minor and 17 for Ross). In the division standings, the Golden Bulls are 2-3 on the season.
Saturday's contest will be the first of two meetings between the men's and women's programs. The Bears split the season series with JCSU but claimed a 78-75 win in the last meeting on Feb. 24, 2018 while the Lady Bears were swept the Golden Bulls, including a 79-51 loss in Charlotte on Feb. 24, 2018.
