RALEIGH, N.C. – Junior Macy Keen (Fort Lauderdale, FL) scored 24 points and pulled down 16 rebounds as the Shaw University women's basketball outlasted Salem University, 84-77 in its non-conference finale Monday night in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
Senior KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) finished with 23 points and eight rebounds as the Lady Bears move to 5-12 overall. Shaw dominated on the glass, out-rebounding Salem 50-36 and advantages in points in the paint (44-22) and fast break points (16-12).
Although Shaw led 26-15 after the first quarter, the Lady Tigers (3-14) refused to go away, keeping the game close at 26-20 in the second quarter. The Lady Bears then used a 14-0 run to lead by 20 – its largest lead of the night in route to a 47-33 at halftime.
In the second half, Salem showed no quitting as they kept within reach of the Lady Bears throughout the frame. The Lady Tigers outscored Shaw 18-8 to pull within six but the Lady Bears went up double digits again after using a 9-0 run to lead 65-52 at the end of the third quarter.
Things really got interesting in the fourth quarter when Salem roared back from a 16-point deficit to trim the Lady Bears lead to one (71-71) with 4:04 left capped off by a layup from Aaliyah Holmes. Two free throws from Precious Price knotted the contest at 73-even but Keen took over, gathering six of the Lady Bears last 10-points to help lift Shaw past Salem down the stretch.
Priced had a team-high 21 points and four rebounds while Daniela Villalobos and Holmes chipped in 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Shaw will return to action and conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at Winston-Salem State University. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
