RALEIGH, N.C. – Coming off a New Year victory, the Shaw University women's basketball team will travel to Orangeburg, S.C., to meet Claflin University for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contest Monday, Jan. 7.
This will the second meeting between Shaw and Claflin this season as both teams met earlier this season in Raleigh on Nov. 24. The Lady Bears suffered a buzzer beater loss to the Lady Panthers by the score of 77-75. Shaw leads the all-time series 2-1 overall.
The Lady Bears (3-8, 0-3 CIAA) earned their first victory of 2019 Saturday night, defeating Washington Adventist 91-63 in Spaulding. Four different players scored double figures led by senior Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) who led the way with a game-high 24 points, eight assists and six rebounds.
Shaw enters Monday's action, averaging 67.8 points, 41.5 rebounds and 12.9 assists per game. Sweatt is the team's leading scorer, posting 18.7 points per outing while senior KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) accounts for 16.4 ppg. Both guards rank third and fifth in the CIAA in scoring, respectively.
Clalfin (7-8, 5-4 CIAA) is coming off an 81-56 loss at Winston-Salem State Saturday. Ashley Fields is the team's best offensive player, averaging 15.7 points while Deja Dickens and Dashia Jackson add 11.7 and 11.1 points, respectively. Collectively, Claflin combines for 59.4 points, 36.9 rebounds and 8.1 assists per game.
The Lady Panthers are currently in first place in the Southern Division standings with a 2-2 mark while Shaw stands 0-1 in sixth place.
Following Monday's contest, the Lady Bears will return home to host a six-game home stretch beginning with Virginia Union University on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 6 p.m. in Spaulding.
