RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's basketball team opened up the New Year in the win column after defeating Washington Adventist University 91-63 Saturday night inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. The victory snapped a six game skid for the Lady Bears who now stand 3-8 on the year while WAU dips to 7-8 overall.
In a balanced attack offensively, Shaw shot 49.3-percent for the game, led by senior Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) with 24 points, eight assists, six rebounds and four steals while junior Macy Keen (Fort Lauderdale, FL) recorded a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Senior KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) also registered a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds while junior Victoria Swanson (Monmouth, OR) contributed a season-high 16 points, career-high 12 assists and two steals.
Behind 43.6-percent shooting in the first half, Shaw opened up the contest with a 9-0 run forcing the Shock to call an early timeout. WAU ended up scoring seven-straight after that timeout to pull within two at the 5:40 mark. The Lady Bears closed out the first quarter with a 15-8 run to lead 26-17 over the Shock.
The Lady Bears maintained and kept a lead the entire second quarter but a very scrappy Washington Adventist squad cut the deficit to six points four times before a 15-footer from Martin and then a layup from Keen put Shaw ahead by double digits (38-28) on the verge to a 40-31 lead at halftime.
Shaw ballooned to a 25-point lead in the second half, outscoring the Shock 29-15 en route to a 69-46 lead heading into the fourth quarter. WAU cut the deficit to 20 points on a 14-11 scoring frame but that would be the closest they'd get to the Lady Bears for the remainder of the contest as Shaw orchestrated 11-straight points in the last 3:52 of play to claim the victory.
Candice Berner and Chynna Smith both finished with 14 points apiece to lead Washington Adventist in scoring.
Shaw will return to action Monday, Jan. 7 at Claflin University for a CIAA Southern Division contest at 5:30 p.m. in Orangeburg, S.C.
