RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's basketball team will open up 2019 with a home nonconference contest against Washington Adventist University Saturday, Jan. 5 inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium at 7 p.m.

The Lady Bears (2-8) are hoping to snap a six-game skid to start the New Year as Shaw has not won a game since Nov. 17. Prior to the holiday break, the Lady Bears suffered two losses at the Lynn Holiday Classic in their last outing. However, the Lady Bears have a 2-1 mark at home on the year.
In over the 10-game span, senior's Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) and KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) have anchored the offense for Shaw posting 18.2 and 16.3 points, respectively. Both players rank top-5 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Conference (CIAA) in scoring. Collectively, Shaw scores 65.5 points per game.
WAU, a NAIA institution out of Tacoma Park, Md., enters Saturday's game with a 7-7 overall record having lost two straight. The contest will also mark the first game for the Lady Shock in the New Year as WAU post a 1-5 mark on the road so far on the season.
Some quick leaders for the Lady Shock include Amber Morman who is the team's offensive player, averaging 8.8 ppg while Aryanna Hutcherson adds 7.7 ppg. WAU averages 59.8 points per outing.
This will be the second consecutive year that both team have met on the court, last season Shaw fell 68-66 to Washington Adventist on Nov. 20, 2017.
