RALEIGH, N.C. – With two more games left in the 2018 portion of the 2018-19 season for the Shaw University women's basketball team, the Lady Bears will compete in the Lynn University women's basketball Holiday Classic beginning on Tuesday, Dec. 18 with a non-conference contest versus Lynn at 11 a.m. at the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center in Boca Raton, Fla., followed by a tilt with Saint Leo on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 12 noon.
About The Lady Bears:
The Lady Bears will look to get back into the win column Tuesday against the Fighting Knights of Lynn after suffering a 67-43 loss at Chowan Saturday (Dec. 15) in conference action. Shaw has lost its last four games to head into the tournament with a 2-6 overall record. The Lady Bears average 68.3 points and 40.4 rebounds per game while shooting 41-percent from the field, 30.3-percent from the 3-point line and 67.3-percent from the foul line. Two players average double figures in scoring led by senior guard Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) at 18.5 ppg while senior guard KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) posts 16.0 ppg.
Tuesday's clash will mark the sixth meeting between Shaw and Lynn as the Lady Bears lead the all-time series 1-4 overall.
The Fighting Knights are 5-1 overall and 5-0 at home this season entering their Holiday Classic. Lynn is coming off a 78-54 exhibition win over Webber International. Prior that win, LU suffered a 70-41 loss to Rollins. Offensively, the Fighting Knights have three players that average double figures in scoring led by Jaylen Snipes (11.5) while Juju Uloma and Sydney Fields chip in 10.3 and 10.0 points, respectively.
As a team, Lynn averages 60.8 points and 39.0 rebounds per game behind 40.1-percent shooting.
The last time Shaw and Lynn met was during the 2017-18 season where the Fighting Knights won 59-55.
About Saint Leo:
Saint Leo topped Weber International in their last outing to improve to 5-4 overall entering the Holiday Classic. Casey Wortley leads the offensive attack with 13.6 ppg while Gina Brierley averages 9.8 points. The Lions put up 61.7 points and 35.3 rebounds a night.
Shaw and Saint Leo met last year also at the Lynn University Tournament where the Lady Bears were defeated by the Lions 81-57.
Also competing in the Holiday Classic is Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) member Johnson C. Smith University.
Shaw will start the New Year off with a home contest against Washington Adventist on Saturday, Jan. 5 inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
