RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University women's basketball picked its second straight win, topping the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon, 76-71 inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium Saturday afternoon in a nonconference contest. The Lady Bears improve to 2-2 overall while UPR-B dips to 0-2.
The Lady Bears got a game-high of 26 points from senior guard Tahniyah Sweatt (Pasadena, CA), including 10-of-15 from the charity stripe to go along with five rebounds, four steals and four assists while junior center Macy Keen (Fort Lauderdale, FL) picked up her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 14 rebounds as senior guard KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) added 10 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Free throws and rebounding would be the difference maker in the game for the Lady Bears. Shaw outrebounded the Cowboys, 43-35 and held a 35-20 frame in points off of turnovers while owning an 18-10 stand in second chance opportunities.
The Lady Bears scored the first six points, en route to taking a 15-9 lead capped off by a layup from Keen at the 4:14 mark before closing out the first quarter with a 20-15 lead. Shaw blistered a 14-point lead with one second remaining after a good free-throw from freshman Amani Moxley (Moreno Valley, CA) as the Lady Bears outscored the UPRB 21-12.
UPRB used an 18-6 scoring margin to close the gap to two points (47-45) in the third quarter but the Lady Bears managed to put together a 9-4 advantage to lead 58-49 at the end of the stanza. With a double digit lead again, Shaw controlled the pace of the fourth quarter up until the 5:19 mark when the Cowboys rallied over the next four minutes to trail by two (69-67) after a layup from Anellisse Vargas. Four straight free-throws from Sweatt provided a six-point cushion for Shaw and despite UPRB's efforts, the Lady Bears would come away with the win when Sweatt iced of 1-of-2 free throws in the last three seconds of the contest.
Four players finished in double figures for the Cowboys led by Vargas with 14 points, five rebounds and five steals. Nicole Diaz and Kiaraliz Rios chipped in 13 points apiece while Alysha Cotto finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Rios also grabbed in nine rebounds in the loss.
Shaw returns to action Saturday, Nov. 24 with a home contest and CIAA opener against Claflin University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Spaulding.
