RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior guard KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) recorded her first double-double of the season with 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Shaw University women's basketball team to their first win of the 2018-19 season with a 79-57 victory over Clark Atlanta University (0-3) Friday night in their home opener.
Senior guard Tahniyah Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) added 16 points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals while junior center Macy Keen (Fort Lauderdale, FL) contributed 13 points and a career-high 18 rebounds to go along with three blocks in the winning effort.
The Lady Bears (1-2) outscored the Lady Panthers in three-straight quarters while registering a shooting percentage of 48.5 percent from the floor and 46.2 percent from the 3-point line.
Shaw got off to a really hot start in the first quarter led by a 19-9 scoring margin. In the second stanza, the Lady Bears scored four-straight to lead by 15 (24-9) before CAU closed within 10 but Shaw constructed a 14-7 run to lead 42-24 at halftime led by Martin who led all scorers with 12 points at the break.
The Lady Bears picked up where they left in the third quarter, using a 21-10 spread that featured nine points off of turnovers, eight points from the paint and six second chance points to take a commanding 63-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
With their largest lead of the night at 28 (63-35), the Lady Bears scored 16 more points while CAU tallied 23, ending the game with a 79-57 win.
The Lady Panthers leading scorer was Jamila Mitchell with 16 points while I'Nayah Moore collected nine rebounds in the loss for Clark Atlanta.
Shaw returns to action Saturday (Nov. 17) against the University Puerto Rico-Bayamon at 2 p.m. in Spaulding.
