SHEPHERD, W. Va. – The Shaw University women's basketball team put up a great effort but it would not be enough to overcome an 86-71 decision to Shepherd University Saturday afternoon to conclude the Conference Challenge hosted by the Rams in Shepherdstown, W. Va.
The loss dips the Lady Bears to 0-2 to start the season while Shepherd improves to 2-0 on the young season.
Shaw had two players chart double digits in scoring led by senior guard Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) who scored 22 points and grabbed five rebounds while senior guard/forward KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) added 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting.
Both teams scored 13 points apiece after the first quarter, the Lady Bears then started off the second stanza with a two-point lead on a layup from freshman guard Vanessa Davies (Bremerton, WA) but on the ensuing possession, the Rams hit a 3-pointer to take a one point lead after one minute of play.
The lead would change twice as both teams exchanged baskets over several minutes. Two free-throws from Martin cut the deficit to three as the Lady Bears trailed 38-35 at halftime.
Shepherd outscored the Lady Bears 26-16 in the third quarter after shooting over 50-percent from the floor including 67-percent (2-3) from the 3 point line compared to Shaw who charted 47-percent.
Facing a 13-point deficit to start the fourth quarter, Shaw scored its first basket with 7:40 on the clock but the Lady Bears were down by 17 at that point and could not recover from the large deficit down the stretch.
Shaw will return to action for its home opener on Friday, Nov. 16 with the Lady Bears hosting the Shaw University Tournament featuring Clark Atlanta and the University of Puerto Rico. Shaw will face Clark Atlanta Friday at 4 p.m. in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
