RALEIGH, N.C. – Junior Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) netted a career-high 31 points but the Shaw University women's basketball team fell 90-81 to the visiting Lady Blue Bears of Livingstone College on Wednesday evening in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contest at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
Sweatt also grabbed eight rebounds while dishing out seven assists and three steals for Shaw. Senior Chelsea Long (Melbourne, FL) added 17 points, six rebounds and three steals in the loss.
Shaw shot 41.8-percent from the floor (23-55) and connected 31-of-45 free-throws for 68.9-percent. LC secured 31-of-75 shots from field goal range, shooting 41.3-percent and 71.4-percent from the charity stripe (15-21).
The Lady Bears (5-17, 2-10 CIAA, 1-5 South) trailed 9-6 in the first five minutes of action. A jumper from Sweatt pulled Shaw within one but LC then gathered a 6-0 run to lead 14-9 over the Lady Bears with 2:45 left in the first quarter. The Lady Blue Bears would own a 10-2 ratio in points off of turnovers to lead 21-14 after one quarter.
The second quarter featured a 23-8 scoring margin for LC that gave them 22-point advantaged over Shaw with 3:08 remaining in the first half. The Lady Bears scored the last four points to cut the deficit 48-29 at halftime.
Despite a 10-5 run in the third quarter and a 22-13 point scoring margin, the Lady Bears continued to trail with a 10-point shortfall heading into the fourth quarter. A 3-pointer from Long cut the Lady Blue Bears lead to single digits but LC responded on two occasions with 3-pointers to go ahead (70-59).
With 7:35 left in regulation, Shaw orchestrated a 10-3 spread that closed the gap to six points but LC scored five-straight to stretch their lead back to double figures. A jumper by Taylor Perkins would put the Lady Blue Bears ahead 13-points (85-72) with 1:16 remaining which ultimately led to a the nine-point loss for Shaw as freshman Micah Browne (Trinidad) hit a jumper at the buzzer.
Perkins led the offensive attack for LC with 18 points and five rebounds while Nina Robinson scored 13 points and 10 rebounds. Kyala Searcy and Kedra Bradley finished with 12 points apiece in the win for the Lady Blue Bears (6-16, 1-11 CIAA, 1-5 South).
Shaw will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Winston-Salem State University for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
