RALEIGH, N.C. –  Three Lady Bears women's basketball players scored in double figures but the Shaw University fell short in the second half to the visiting Johnson C. Smith University by the score of 78-60 Saturday afternoon in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contest.

Sophomore Lervencia Johnson-Tyler (Many, LA) scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed five rebounds while junior Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) tallied 16 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals. Junior Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) finished with 10 points in the loss for Shaw.

Both teams shot over 40-percent from the field but JCSU outrebounded the Lady Bears 46-32 and scored 32-points off of 29 turnovers from Shaw. The loss dropped the Lady Bears (5-17, 2-9 CIAA) to 1-4 in the South while the Golden Bulls (13-7, 5-4 CIAA) improve to 3-2 in the South.

JCSU got on the scoreboard first with a layup from La'Zarea Bowens but Johnson-Tyler responded with a jumper to give the game its first tie of the afternoon. The Golden Bulls took a 11-4 lead on an 8-3 run at the 5:07 mark. Shaw would cut the deficit to one on a 3-pointer from Kellow as the Lady Bears trailed 15-14 after one quarter.

The Lady Bears scored six-straight points to lead 20-15 over JCSU with 8:10 left in the first half. The Golden Bulls would then make run of their own, producing a 10-4 spurt to tie the game at 24-24 as 5:53 showed on the game clock. Two more ties later, the Lady Bears took a 30-28 lead going into locker room as Johnson-Tyler banked a layup at the buzzer.

Shaw shot 44.4-percent (12-27) from the floor and outscored JCSU 8-0 in fast break points. Both Johnson-Tyler and the Golden Bull's Bowens tallied 13 points apiece in the first half.

Kellow opened up the second half with a 3-pointer for Shaw but JCSU made a layup to keep within the Lady Bears.  Shaw led until the 8:10 mark. The Golden Bulls orchestrated a 10-4 scoring margin to lead 46-41 over Shaw with 4:42 left in the third quarter. JCSU led by as many as eight points before the Lady Bears gathered four unanswered points to trail only 54-38 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Golden Bulls embarked on a 15-point lead midway of the fourth quarter as they outscored the Lady Bears 24-12 for the 78-60 win, giving Shaw their fifth-consecutive loss.

Jasmine Carter led all scorers with 19 points off the bench for JCSU. Kendall Adams tallied 18 points, nine rebounds while Bowens garnered 17 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Shaw will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 7 versus Livingstone College for a CIAA southern division matchup in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
