SALISBURY, N.C. – The Shaw University women's basketball snapped a seven-game losing skid with a 95-71 victory over Livingstone College in their Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division opener Saturday afternoon in New Trent Gymnasium. The Lady Bears had four players score in double figures led by senior Chelsea Long (Melbourne, FL) with a season-high 20 points and six rebounds in the Lady Bears offensive attack.

Today's game is the first win for Shaw since Dec. 14 when the Lady Bears defeated Elizabeth City State in Raleigh, N.C. Shaw now stands 4-13 overall, 2-4 in the CIAA and 1-0 in the south while Livingstone dips to 5-10 on the year, 0-6 in the league and 0-1 in the south.

Senior LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) hauled in 18 points, 13 rebounds and four steals while senior KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) added 17 points and 11 rebounds, following junior Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) with 16 points off the bench for Shaw. The Lady Bears shot over 40-percent from the field in all four quarters, including 47-percent in the third quarter (9-of-19). Additionally, junior Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) dished out a game-high eight assists to go along with seven points, four rebounds and and three steals.

After a 4-4 tie at the 7:24 on the clock, the Lady Bears went on a 11-4 run to lead 15-8 over Livingstone but as expected the Lady Blue Bears would make a run of their own to pull within one (16-15) until Shaw scored eight unanswered points to lead 24-15 at the end of the first quarter.

Things really picked up for Shaw in the second quarter as the Lady Bears built their largest lead of the first half on a 28-8 scoring margin. Shaw's suffocating defense also held the Lady Blue Bears scoreless for over five minutes as they went into the locker room with a 52-23 lead at halftime.

Although the Lady Bears held a 25-22 edge in the third quarter and was outscored 26-18 in the fourth quarter, LC really had no answer for Shaw in the game. The Lady Bears led by 32 points at the end of the third frame before producing an 84-49 spread in the fourth stanza. LC cut the deficit to 23 points on several occasions but Shaw would not allow the Lady Blue Bears to get any closer as they cruised to the win.

Asia Green led LC in scoring with 28 points and six rebounds while Kyala Searcy added 22 points, seven rebounds and seven steals in the loss for Livingstone.

Shaw will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at Paine College for a non-conference game. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
