BOWIE, Md. Sophomore Lervencia Johnson-Tyler (Many, LA) produced her fourth double-double of the season with 21 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks but her efforts were not enough as the Shaw University women's basketball team suffered a 73-49 decision at Bowie State University Saturday afternoon at the A.C. Jordan Arena in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division action.

The Lady Bears (3-12, 1-3 CIAA) were outscored in all four quarters, including a 22-12 deficit that pulled the Bulldogs (10-3, 3-1 CIAA) away from Shaw heading into the fourth. Shaw's offensive struggle resulted in the Lady Bears shooting 36-percent from the floor, 12.5-percent from long distance and just 63.2-percent from the charity stripe.

Shaw had one other player score in double figures, junior Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) who finished with 11 points and five rebounds in the loss.

With a two-point advantage before tip-off, the Lady Bears gathered an 8-3 lead after a layup from Johnson-Tyler at the 5:24 mark. The Bulldogs responded with a 3-pointer from Kiara Colston to tie the game at 8-8 as BSU went on to score seven unanswered points to go up 12-8. The Lady Bears scored just one point after, trailing 15-9 at the end of the first quarter.

A 3-pointer from junior Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) pulled Shaw within three to start the second quarter but BSU started to pull away from Shaw led by a 13-5 scoring margin with 2:35 remaining in the first half. The Lady Bears would outscore the Bulldogs 4-2 in the last 2:15 to fall behind 30-21 at halftime.

The Bulldogs started to pull away from Shaw in the third quarter. The Lady Bears kept the gap within single digits until BSU went on a 15-4 run, including seven-straight points to stand 21 points over Shaw (52-31). They would outscore the Lady Bears 22-12 in that frame.

The final quarter featured much of the same for the Lady Bears as Shaw allowed BSU to score nine points off of turnovers. The Lady Bears would not get any closer than 17 points (64-47) for the remainder of the contest.

Colston paced the Bulldogs offensively with a game-high 23 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Kyah Proctor added 14 points and seven rebounds while Talanya Hutton chipped in 10 points for BSU.

Shaw will travel to Lincoln (Pa.) on Monday, Jan. 8. for a CIAA cross division contest at 2 p.m.
