SHAW CONTINUES ROAD SKID, TRAVELS TO BOWIE STATE ON SATURDAY

BOWIE, Md. Both the Shaw University men's and women's basketball teams will continue their road skid and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division action on Saturday, Jan. 6 at Bowie State University. The women's game will tipoff at 2 p.m., followed by the men's game at approximately 4 p.m. inside the A.C. Jordan Arena.

 

General Admission tickets are $15 and $10 for Senior Citizens, Active Military and Non-BSU Students w/ID.

 

Saturday's doubleheader at Bowie State will offer live audio on WSHA 88.9 FM with Donal Ware providing play-by-play commentary. Live stats and video for both games will be available on www.shawbears.com.

 

The Lady Bears: Shaw is looking to snap a four-game skid; the Lady Bears are coming off a 93-76 loss to No. 15 Virginia Union Thursday. Senior LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) led the way with 21 points and nine rebounds while junior Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) recorded 20 points, six rebounds and six assists. Sophomore Lervencia Johnson-Tyler (Many, LA) added 12 points and a team-best 10 rebounds while junior Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) chipped in 11 points off the bench.

 

Despite the loss, the Lady Bears currently stand second in the CIAA Southern Division race.

 

The Bulldogs: BSU welcomes the Lady Bears to A.C. Jordan Arena with a 9-3 overall record and 2-1 mark in the CIAA after earning an 80-62 victory over the visiting Lady Falcons of Saint Augustine's Thursday. Kiara Colston and Kyah Proctor came off the bench to lead the team with 19 and 18 points, respectively. The Bulldogs stand fourth in the CIAA Northern Division.

 

This will be the first meeting between the two squads of the 2017-18 season. Last year, the Lady Bears defeated BSU, 79-69 in C.C. Spaulding. Shaw has won the last two meetings against the Bulldogs as they lead the all-time series 32-20 overall.

 

The Bears: After winning six-straight games, Shaw had their streak snapped by the Panthers of Virginia Union Thursday night as the Bears suffered a 98-96 loss in double overtime. The Bears had four players chart double figures in scoring led by senior Savon Goodman (Philadelphia, PA) who recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Senior Krishaun Myers (Pompano Beach, FL) scored 19 while senior DeAngelo Stephens-Bell (Jacksonville, FL) recorded 16 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Sophomore DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) finished with 15 points.

 

Shaw is 8-5 overall, 2-1 in the conference and currently stand in second place in the Southern Division.

 

The Bulldogs: BSU topped Saint Augustine's on Thursday, 87-82 in overtime to stand 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the league. The win snapped a four-game losing skid for the Bulldogs whom were led by Ahmaad Wilson with 22 points and David Belle's 20 points. Cameron Hayes contributed 14 points while Saiquan Jamison finished with 15 points and 20 rebounds. The Bulldogs are fourth in the Northern Division standings.

 

This will be the 48th meeting between the two programs. On Jan. 11, 2017, Bowie State defeated Shaw in Spaulding by the score of 64-61.

 

Following Saturday's doubleheader, Shaw will travel to Lincoln (Pa.) on Monday, Jan. 8. The women's game will start at 2 p.m. and the men's game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
