RICHMOND, Va. The Shaw University women's basketball team was outrebounded 52-43 in a 93-76 loss to Virginia Union University on Saturday afternoon inside Barco-Stevens Hall in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division action.

The loss dropped Shaw to 3-11 overall and 1-2 in CIAA action while VUU improves to 12-1 on the season and 4-0 in the league.

Although the Lady Bears shot 43.5-percent from the field compared to the Lady Panthers' 44.9-percent, Shaw was out numbered in second chances as VUU secured 23 points off of their 28 offensive rebounds. The Panthers outscored Shaw 58-22 in the paint, 38-19 in fast breaks and gathered a 38-17 ratio from their bench.

The Lady Bears were outscored 25-18 in the opening quarter but in the second frame, Shaw trimmed the deficit to four points after scoring six-straight with 6:23 on the game clock. The Lady Panthers then orchestrated 16-7 run to lead by 13-points before senior LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) drained a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 10 (46-36) at halftime.

VUU produced a 15-5 spurt to start the second half as the Lady Bears then trailed by 22-points with 6:06 left in the third quarter. Shaw cut the lead to 17-points on several occasions but unfortunately that would be the closest the Lady Bears would get for the remainder of the contest despite the Lady Bears 21-18 scoring margin in the fourth quarter.

Shaw had four players register double figures in scoring led by Taylor who finished 21 points and nine rebounds. Junior Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) was responsible for 20 points, six rebounds and six assists, while sophomore Lervencia Johnson-Tyler (Many, LA) had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) rounded out the double digit scoring for the Lady Bears with 11 points in the loss.

VUU was led by Alexis Johnson who finished with a game-high 25 points and 16 boards, while Rachael Pecota added 16 points and 13 rebounds. Both Shameka McNeil and Shareka McNeil chipped in 15 points apiece.

Shaw will return to action Saturday, Jan. 6 in Bowie, Md., as the Lady Bears will look to snap a five-game skid against the Bulldogs of Bowe State. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
