RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's basketball came up short, 87-80 to the visiting Bulldogs of Barton College on Tuesday night inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. The loss dipped the Lady Bears to 3-10 overall while Barton improves to 7-5 on the year.
Senior LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) paced the Lady Bears with 22 points while sophomore Lervencia Johnson-Tyler (Many, LA) chipped in 15 points, nine rebounds and a game-high five blocks. Senior Aliyah Cooley (Brooklyn, NY) added a career-high 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocks while newcomer and junior Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) finished with 12 points, seven assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Barton got off to a 6-2 start in the opening quarter before the Lady Bears managed to put together a 7-3 scoring margin to tie the game at 9-9 at the 4:27 mark. Despite the tie, the Bulldogs went up 21-15 over Shaw after a 12-6 run.
The Lady Bears found themselves trailing by as many as 15 points on two occasions but Shaw found some life, scoring six-straight to cut the deficit 38-29 with 3:12 left in the first half.
A jumper from Cooley , followed by a layup from Sweatt closed the gap to six (39-33) but the Lady Bears still fell behind 44-37 at halftime.
With a change in the lineup in the second half, the Lady Bears outscored the Bulldogs 18-15 in the third quarter. Shaw also took their first lead of the game on a jumper from Cooley with 1:21 remaining but two costly turnovers from the Lady Bears resulted in four points for Barton who led 59-55 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lady Bears got within five points three times late in the final stanza but that would be the closest Shaw would get for the remainder of the way as two free-throws from the Bulldogs with 19 seconds remaining gave Barton some cushion to secure the 87-80 over the Lady Bears.
Kianna Wynn led the efforts for Barton with 25 points and 13 rebounds, following Alex Kimble with 22 points and six rebounds and Dinah Neal chipped in 18 points to round out the double figure scoring
Shaw will return to action and pick up conference play on Thursday, Jan. 4 when the Lady Bears begin its five-game road swing and conference cross-division action starting with Virginia Union University. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
