RALEIGH, N.C. -  The Shaw University women's basketball team fell 82-70 to the visiting Hawks of Chowan University on Tuesday night inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. The loss dips the Lady Bears (2-6) to an 0-1 start in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) as the Hawks (9-1) improve to 1-0 against league opponents.

Senior forward LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) scored a game-high 22 points to go along with four rebounds, three steals and two assists while junior Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) added 12 points and dished out five assists, following senior forward KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) who chipped in 11 points and five rebounds.

For the contest, both teams shot over 40-percent from the field and Shaw connected 15-of-21 free-throws (71%) but the Lady Bears were outscored 48-12 in the paint, 18-2 in second chances and 12-2 in fast break points.

After two ties in the opening quarter, the Lady Bears took a seven-point lead beginning at the 4:34 mark to lead 13-6 over the Hawks. Shaw held on to their lead heading to the second frame despite Chowan's 9-5 scoring advantage in the last 3:43.

Both teams went point-for-point to start the second quarter as the game eventually tied for the third time on the night at 26-26 after a layup from Dhyamond Crenshaw with 6:34 on the game clock.

The Hawks took the lead thanks to a 3-pointer from Chantel Roberts that ballooned a lead as large as 12-points over Shaw with 42 seconds remaining in the first half but freshman Keyonte Cherry (Rocky Mount, NC) made 1-of-2 free-throws to cut the deficit to 11-points (41-30) at halftime.

To start the third quarter, both teams combined for six mixed shots until the Hawks broke the scoring drought with a basket from Roberts to put CU ahead 43-30 with under 9:00. Shaw then allowed Chowan to orchestrate a 12-4 scoring frame for their largest lead of the game at 19 in route to a 62-50 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Despite the deficit, the Lady Bears would not give up as they managed to trim at the Hawks lead four times. On the Lady Bears last attempt to pull within single digits, Chowan scored four unanswered points to go up 11 (78-67) and from there the Lady Bears were never able to recover from the double digit deficit.

Although Shaw suffered the loss, the Lady Bears hung with the No. 8 Hawks as Shaw was only outscored 26-12 in the second quarter and 21-20 in the third.

Crenshaw led the Hawks efforts with 21 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Roberts finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals while Danielle Weldon scored 16 points and eight rebounds. Mariah Coker would round out the double-figure scoring with 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Shaw will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 14 versus Elizabeth City State University for a CIAA cross division contest inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
