RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's and women's basketball teams will host their Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference opener Tuesday, Dec. 12 with a doubleheader versus the Hawks of Chowan University inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.


The first contest will feature the Lady Bears (2-5) against the Hawks (8-1) beginning at 6 p.m., followed by the men's contest in an 8 p.m. start.


The women are coming off an 81-70 win over William Peace on Wednesday. Senior forward LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) scored a game-high 31 points and career-high nine blocks but senior forward, KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) tallied 21 points in the second half helped Shaw to their second victory on the season. She finished with 25 points and game-high 15 rebounds – her third double-double on the season. The Lady Bears outscored the Pacers 28-15 in the fourth quarter for the victory.


Meanwhile, the Hawks who recently moved up to the No. 8 spot in the D2SIDA Atlantic Regional Polls enter Tuesday's game on a four-game win-streak. In their last outing, CU defeated Mount Olive, 80-77 last Wednesday on the road. The game featured three players scoring in double figures led by Dhyamond Crenshaw with 27 points and eight rebounds.


The Hawks are 3-1 on the road this season.


The last meeting between the two teams was played in Murfreesboro, N.C. where the Lady Bears fell 80-59 on Dec. 10, 2016. Tuesday's game will mark the 11th meeting between both programs, Shaw leads the all-time series 8-3 overall.


On the men's side, the Bears (4-4) return to action after having a week off. Senior guard DeAngelo Stephens-Bell leads the way with 20.8 points while sophomore guard DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) follows with 18.9 points and senior forward Savon Goodman (Philadelphia, PA) adds 15.5 points and a team-best 7.0 rebounds. He was named the CIAA Newcomer of the Week during the week of four.


Also with a 4-4 record in their first eight games, Chowan have lost their last four games including their most recent versus Mount Olive on Wednesday by the score of 65-64. The Hawks were led by Brandon Mayhan who posted a career-high 17 points. On the season thus far, CU has four players averaging double digits in scoring that includes their leading scorer Tim Hewett at 15.6 points a night. CU 1-2 on the road this season.

This will also be the 11th overall meeting between the two programs. Last season, Shaw was defeated by Chowan, 75-72 at the Helms Center.
