RALEIGH, NC – Junior Bianca Maxwell (London, England) hit two free-throws with 10 seconds remaining and senior Imani Heggins (Chesapeake, VA) had a block and a defensive rebound to secure the Shaw University women's basketball 74-73 win over Johnson C. Smith University Saturday afternoon in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

The win marks Shaw's (11-17, 8-8 CIAA, 6-4 Division) third-straight at home over the Golden Bulls (19-7, 12-4 CIAA, 8-2 Division), who entered Saturday's game with a four-game win-streak.

Maxwell ended the game with 21 points, 10 rebounds and three assists, while Heggins added 15 points and eight rebounds. Shaw shot 44 percent (22-50) from the field, including 75.8 percent (25-33) from the foul line and 33.3 percent (5-15) from the three-point line.

Both teams turned the ball over at least 10 times in the opening quarter but JCSU would have an 18-14 lead over Shaw heading into the second quarter.

The Lady Bears pulled within one (22-21) after scoring five-straight at the 6:38 mark but the Golden Bulls would put their foot on the pedal on an 8-2 frame that gave JCSU a 10-point lead over Shaw with 1:26 remaining in the first half. Shaw managed to trim the deficit to 37-32 at halftime.

JCSU established a 14-4 run in the third quarter to lead 53-38 over Shaw but the Lady Bears responded with a 12-2 spurt to close the gap 55-50 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Maxwell and Heggins combined for 14 of the Lady Bears 24 points in the final 10 minutes. The contest tied four times with two lead changes in the last 2:09 before Shaw took the lead for good ignited by a three-pointer from junior Chelesa Long (Melbourne, FL) to give Shaw a two-point edge. The Lady Bears would hold a 7-5 scoring advantage in the final seconds in addition to four made free-throws and a defensive stop.

Blaire Thomas led the Golden Bulls with 17 points, while Anika Jones added 15 points and Krista White finished with 11 points.

Shaw will now await the seeding for the 2017 CIAA Basketball Tournament that will be announced later on this evening.
