RALEIGH, NC – On Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017 inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium, the Shaw University men's and women's basketball teams will face long-time rival Saint Augustine's University for a much anticipated Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division doubleheader showdown beginning with the women's game at 2 p.m. and the men's game at approximately 4 p.m.


General admission is $15. Visiting college students, senior citizens and military personnel with valid ID is $10. The doubleheader is free for Shaw students with proper ID and children ages five and under. Due to a large anticipated crowd, seating will be limited. Fans are asked to arrive early as doors will open at 1 p.m.

Coming off a 65-59 loss at Winston-Salem State Wednesday, the Lady Bears (5-13, 2-4 CIAA, 0-1 Division) will look to bounce back with hopes of adding a win to its divisional record with a victory and bragging rice over SAU Saturday. Shaw has four players charting double digits in scoring led by junior LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) with 22.5 points per game. Senior Imani Heggins (Chesapeake, VA) adds 12. 3 points, freshman Stephanie Custodio (Chino, CA) contributes 12.1 points and junior Bianca Maxwell (London, England) tabs 10.7 points and a team-best 11.8 rebounds per contest.


The Lady Falcons (3-17, 0-8 CIAA, 0-2 Division) head to Spaulding after coming off a 67-44 loss at Johnson C. Smith Wednesday, the setback marks the 11th-straight loss for SAU. The Lady Falcons have one player averaging double figures in scoring in Kaaliya Williams who posts 11.7 points per game.  Williams also leads the team in rebounds with a team-best 4.2 boards per outing.


Shaw has won the last 14 meetings against the Lady Falcons in the last six years.


The Bears (7-9, 3-3 CIAA, 1-0 Division) return home to Spaulding after a 64-62 road win over Winston-Salem State Wednesday night whereas the Falcons (10-9, 4-4 CIAA, 1-1 Division) enter Saturday's action looking to recover from a loss at JCSU by the score of  63-56.


Offensively, the Bears are led by senior Benji Bell (Gainesville, NC) who averages 16.2 points per game while seniors Larry Richardson, II (Garner, NC) and David Madol (Manchester, NH) add 13.2 and 12.1 points, respectively.

As for the Falcons, Quincy January leads the pack with a scoring average of 16.7 points per game, followed by Anthony Gaskins and Kenneth Collins who both contribute 15.9 and 11.5 points per outing. January is the team's leader in rebounds with 9.6 per game.


SAU defeated Shaw twice, including a 93-90 double overtime win in Spaulding last year for a season sweep. The Falcons lead the all-times series 54-32 over the Bears in program history.


Following Saturday's doubleheader, Shaw will return to action Monday, Jan. 23 versus Livingstone College with the women's game at 6 p.m. and the men's game at 8 p.m.
