RALEIGH, NC – After a weekend off from competition due to illness, the Shaw University men's and women's basketball teams will travel to Winston-Salem State University for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division doubleheader Wednesday, Jan. 18 inside the C.E. Gaines Center.

The Lady Bears stand 5-12 overall and 2-3 within the CIAA. Offensively, junior LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) leads the pack in scoring, averaging 24.7 points per game in just three games played. Senior Imani Heggins (Chesapeake, VA), freshman Stephanie Custodio (Chino, CA) and junior Bianca Maxwell (London, England) contribute 12.7, 12.5, and 10.6 points, respectively. The Lady Bears rank second in the league with a three-point percentage of 31.7. Shaw averages 64.1 points per game and ranks second amongst the league in free-throws with an average of 71.7 percent.
WSSU welcome the Lady Bears with a 7-9 overall record and 3-3 in conference action and 1-0 within the division. Tiana Edwards has a team-best 9.6 points per game while Kandace Tate adds 9.4 points. As a team, the Rams are producing 59.9 points per game and shooting 37.7 percent from the field (fourth in the conference), including 30 percent from the three-point line (fourth in the CIAA) and 62.3 percent from the foul line. Defensively, the team averages 44.4 rebounds per outing which ranks the Rams third in league standings.
The Lady Bears swept the season series against the Rams last season. In addition, the two teams met again during the CIAA basketball tournament where Shaw defeated WSSU, 61-43 in the quarterfinal round on Feb. 24, 2016. The Lady Bears lead the all-time series 38-18 over the Rams.
The Shaw Bears enter Wednesday's game with a 6-9 overall record, including a 2-3 mark in the league. Senior Benji Bell (Gainesville, FL) leads Shaw in scoring, averaging 17.3 points per game which ranks him second in the league. Senior Larry Richardson, II (Garner, NC) and senior David Madol (Manchester, NH) are amongst Bell in double digit scoring, posting 12.4 and 12.3 points, respectively.
Overall, the team is tallying 73.5 points per game. From the field, Shaw is shooting 44.7 percent (fifth in CIAA) including 34 percent from the three-point line and 70.8 percent from the foul line (second in CIAA). Defensively, Shaw averages 37.3 rebounds per game and currently sits in second amongst the CIAA with a 4.5 block average.
The Rams are currently 6-9 overall, 2-4 in conference action and 0-1 in the division after defeating Chowan by the score 80-75 Monday. Four players charted double figures in scoring including a team-best from Jamel Mcallister who finished with 16 points. Ameer Jackson leads the team in scoring with an average of 16.1 points, while Robert Colon produces 15.0 points and William Crandell along with Carlos Ranks contribute 14.6 and 13.0 points.
As a team, WSSU averages 75.1 points per contest (fourth in the league) while shooting 42.4 percent from the floor, 35 percent (fourth in CIAA) from the behind the arc and 65.5 percent (second in CIAA) from the charity stripe. Defensively, the Rams total 37.5 rebounds per game.
This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season, Shaw swept WSSU last year but WSSU leads the all-time series 32-54 overall.
