RALEIGH, NC – Junior LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) recorded a career-high 30 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Shaw University women's basketball team to its first conference win on the season against Lincoln University by the score of 68-65 on Monday evening inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

Senior Imani Heggins (Chesapeake, VA) added 18 points and eight rebounds while junior Bianca Maxwell (London, England) grabbed 13 boards and sophomore Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) dished out a season-high five assists in the win.

For the contest, Shaw shot 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from the field while holding LU to 35.2 percent (25-of-71) shooting. The Lady Bears outrebounded its opponent 54-33 and held a 20-13 advantage in bench points.

The Lady Bears (4-12, 1-3 CIAA) raced out to a 12-4 lead in the first five minutes of action led by Taylor's seven points during the spurt. That run would lead to a 20-11 advantage heading into the second frame.

LU (3-11, 1-4 CIAA) cut the deficit to seven points (24-17) in the second quarter after a layup from McKenzie Spencer at the 5:29 mark but that would be the closest the Lady Bears would allow the Lady Lions to get as Shaw scored eight straight to lead 32-20 at the break.

Shaw connected 12-of-32 shots (37.5 percent) from the floor and connected 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) from the foul line compared to the Lady Loins 25.8 percent (8-for-31) and 50 percent (3-for-6) from the charity stripe. Taylor led all scorers at the break with a double-double 14 points and 14 rebounds.

The Lady Bears would maintain its lead in the third quarter despite the Lady Lions efforts to pull within four points on two occasions. Shaw opened up the fourth quarter on a 9-4 run to lead 57-48 with 7:16 left but down the stretch LU used a 6-0 run to trail by one to the Lady Bears. A layup from Custodio put Shaw back up by three points (66-63) at the 1:46 mark but LU scored to cut the deficit again to one point.

Both teams went scoreless with under 1:00 remaining until Kellow netted one-of-two free throws to give Shaw a 67-65 lead with 25 seconds left to play. Two possessions later, Shaw was sent to the foul line as Custodio made one-of-two free throws before the Lady Bears held the Lady Lions scoreless in the final seconds to secure the 68-65 victory.

Shaw will return to action and host Bowie State University on Wednesday, Jan. 11 in Spaulding. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
