CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After suffering a heartbreaking loss to Fayetteville State on Wednesday, the Shaw University women's basketball team recovered nicely with a hard-fought 91-83 victory over Johnson C. Smith University in a hostile BrayBoy Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon to conclude the regular season.
With the win the Lady Bears (22-6, 14-2 CIAA) will likely be the number one seed in the Southern Division after posting a 9-1 record in the division, while the Lady Golden Bulls (16-11, 9-7 CIAA) will likely be the number four seed after finishing with a 5-5 record in the division.
Laquisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) led all players with a career-high 20 points, while grabbing five rebounds and two assists. Kaula Jacks (Chesapeake Beach, MD) poured 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while both Eboni Ross (Columbia, SC) and Tabatha Anderson (Manhattan Beach, CA) charted 14 points each.
Anderson also dished out seven assists and grabbed six rebounds, while Ross had a team-best eight rebounds and two assists. Michelle Wright (Baltimore, MD) concluded the Lady Bears double figure scoring with 12 points off the bench.
Fantasha Tyson (Raleigh, NC) scored the game's first basket to give Shaw the early 2-0 lead but JCSU quickly responded with a basket of their own from Amena Brent. A 3-pointer by Anderson planted a 9-2 run for the Lady Bears midway through the first quarter before JCSU mounted a mini run to get within two points. Shaw would lead 20-18 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Golden Bulls took their first lead of the contest to open up the second quarter when Larryqua Hall converted on a 3-point play to give JCSU the 21-20 lead with 9:10 left. Two good free-throws from Aaliyah Mercer (Bronx, NY) gave Shaw the lead again; however, the contest became tied two more times before JCSU built a 4-0 run for the lead and would hold onto the lead going into the locker room 39-37 at halftime.
The Lady Bears regrouped to start the second half as Shaw went on a 7-0 run to lead 44-39 but the Lady Golden Bulls orchestrated their own run, scoring seven unanswered points to the lead back at the 7:00 mark.
Nevertheless, Shaw continued to push through led by Taylor who charted seven points over the next two minutes to give the Lady Bears a nine-point lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the quarter.
In the final stanza, the Lady Bears led by as many as 12 points until JCSU managed to carve the deficit on a 6-0 run to get within four points with 1:49 remaining but that would be the closest Shaw allowed the Lady Golden Bulls to get for the remainder of the contest to win the game.
Moore finished with 15 points to lead JCSU in scoring, while Krista White added 13 points and A'Diyah Ussery with 12 points. Ashley Porter contributed 11 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Hall also grabbed 14 rebounds in the loss.
Shaw will now await the final seeding for the 2016 CIAA Basketball Tournament at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, NC.
