FAYETTEVILLE STATE SNAPS LADY BEARS 11-GAME WIN-STREAK IN THRILLING FASHION

RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University women's basketball team 11-game win-streak was snapped by the hands of Fayetteville State University, 76-75 in a crowed Spaulding Gymnasium for Senior Day. A last second shot by the Lady Broncos prevailed FSU over Shaw in the final moments of the contest as the Lady Bears suffered their first loss since Jan. 7th.

 

Eboni Ross (Columbia, SC) led all players with 21 points, while grabbing 12 rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Laquisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) added 14 points and 12 rebounds – her first double-double on the season, while Kaula Jacks (Chesapeake Beach, MD) aided 12 points and eight rebounds in the effort.  

 

The Lady Bears (21-6, 13-2 CIAA) jumped out to an 11-4 lead to open the contest after a 3-pointer from Fantasha Tyson (Raleigh, NC) at the 7:11 mark. Shaw maintained control of the game throughout the first quarter and would lead by their largest margin of the first half 23-14 at the conclusion of the quarter.

 

The Lady Broncos (15-12, 9-7 CIAA)cut the lead at the 5:59 mark in the second quarter after Doreen Richardson drained a 15-foot jumper that would spark a 6-1 run for FSU with the score showing 28-26 in favor of the Lady Bears.

 

FSU tied the game at 30-all off a putback from Bria Robinson at the 3:33 mark, from there both teams exchanged buckets over the next two minutes until the Lady Broncos took the lead with a jumper just inside the 3-point line. Shaw allowed FSU to orchestrate a 5-0 run before intermission as the Lady Bears trailed 39-34 at the break.

 

Taylor led the Lady Bears in scoring with 10 points, while Richardson led all players with 11 points for FSU.

 

Both teams exchanged 3-pointers to open up the second half as the Lady Broncos continued to lead. Shaw tied the contest at 42-all off a pull-up jumper from  Jacks with 7:08 left in the third quarter.

 

Down the stretch, FSU got things going offensively building on their two-point lead at the 5:40 mark. The Lady Broncos would score back-to-baskets to lead by four-points (50-46) as the Lady Bears trailed the remainder of the third stanza with a score of 58-50.

 

The Lady Bears would face their largest deficit of the contest at the 8:25 mark when the Lady Broncos went up by 12-points ignited by a 4-0 run to start the final quarter. However, Shaw managed to put together a 13-2 run to get within one-point with 4:30 left in regulation.

 

A 3-pointer by Anderson, followed by a jumper from Ross and a layup from Aaliyah Mercer (Bronx, NY) gave the Lady Bears their first lead since the first quarter.

 

The game became tied two more times before a free-throw by Jacks gave Shaw the one-point lead with 13 seconds remaining but the next possession down, FSU's Richardson made a jumper to seal the win.

 

Richardson paced FSU in scoring with 17 points, four assists, and four rebounds, while Vanessa Hinnant knocked down 16 points, while collecting six rebounds and five assists. Courtney Best added 15 points and six rebounds, while Robinson netted 14 points and 15 rebounds in the win.

 

Shaw will look to recover when they travel to Charlotte, NC to face Johnson C. Smith University for their regular season finale on Saturday, Feb. 20th. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
