RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University women's basketball team ran over cross-town rival Saint Augustine's University 96-58 in a packed Spaulding Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The victory extended the Lady Bears win-streak to 12-games and Shaw's 13th-straight win against the Lady Falcons in the last six years.
Eboni Ross (Columbia, SC) led all players in the game with 16 points, while collecting six rebounds, three assists, three steals and a career-high seven blocks. Michelle Wright charted a season-high 14 points, while Kaula Jacks (Chesapeake Beach, MD) netted 11 points and four assists. Klintisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) concluded the double-figure scoring for Shaw with a career-high 10 points for Shaw (21-5, 13-1 CIAA).
Sycoya Dorsey led the Lady Falcons (3-21, 0-14 CIAA) with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Shakeisha Washington added 13 points and Shankka Harris finished with 10 points.
The Lady Falcons opened the contest with a 7-0 run before a basket by Fantasha Tyson (Raleigh, NC) started a run for the Lady Bears as they scored seven unanswered points of their own to tie the game at 6:53 mark. From there, the two rivals would battle back and forth as the contest became tied again with 4:11 showing but Shaw used a 7-2 run to lead 17-14 at the end of the first stanza.
The Lady Bears had built a double digit lead in the second quarter after a layup from Wright ignited a 17-6 run for Shaw at the 5:15 mark. The Lady Bears posted a 22-point lead in final minute of the first half before SAU drained three-straight 3-pointers to cut the lead to 16 prior to going into the locker room with Shaw leading 48-32.
The Lady Bears would not relinquish the lead in the second half as Shaw opened up the third quarter with a 15-3 run leading 81-44 heading into the final stanza.
The Lady Falcons never got closer than 27 points for the remainder of the contest as Shaw cruised to the victory.
Shaw will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 17th when they host Fayetteville State University for Senior Day. The Lady Bears defeated the Lady Broncos 68-63 back on Jan. 27th. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
