LADY BEARS DOWN LIVINGSTONE, 80-71 EXTEND WIN-STREAK TO NINE GAMES STRAIGHT

RALEIGH, N.C.  – The Shaw University women's basketball team extended their win-streak to nine games after defeating Livingstone College, 80-71 on Saturday afternoon in front of a crowded Spaulding Gymnasium for a CIAA Southern Division contest. The win gives Shaw the season sweep over the Lady Blue Bears as the Lady Bears remain atop in the Southern Division.

Shaw (19-5, 11-1 CIAA) had five players net double figures in scoring led by Kaula Jacks (Chesapeake Beach, MD) who totaled 14 points and six rebounds. Fantasha Tyson (Raleigh, NC) charted 13 points, while Tabatha Anderson (Manhattan Beach, CA) punched in 12 points, while dishing out six assists. Aaliyah Mercer and Michelle Wright (Baltimore, MD) tabbed 11 and 10 points, respectively.

 

For the contest, Shaw connected 30-of-64 from the floor (46.9-percent), while LC accounted for 37.8-percent after shooting 31-of-82 from the field.

 

The Lady Bears trailed 15-8 to the Lady Blue Bears (11-10, 6-6 CIAA) in the opening stanza before Shaw scored eight unanswered points to take their first lead of the contest (16-15) after a layup from Aaliyah Mercer (Bronx, NY). The Lady Bears would lead 19-15 heading into the second quarter.

 

Shaw led the entire second quarter before punching a 11-4 run at the 1:29 mark, closing out the quarter with a ten-point lead (36-26) at half time.

 

The Lady Bears led by as many as 15 points with 8:18 showing on the game clock before  LC managed to build a 16-7  run to cut at Shaw's lead but SU scored four-straight points to close the third quarter with a 61-52 advantage.

 

In the final stanza, LC got within six points on two occasions with the last time showing 7:45 left in regulation before the Lady Bears groomed a 15-point lead to close out the contest with the victory.

 

Ariana De'Jesus led all scorers with 18 points, while collecting eight rebounds for LC. Amber Curtis and Kyala Searcy aided 16 and 10 points in the loss.

 

Shaw will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 10th, when they travel to Winston-Salem State University with a tip scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
